Menace Beach

Indiana Jones Says: Ahhh...Menace.
Marlon Wayans Says: Don't be a menace to the beach...
The Bent Kangaroo Says: ...unless you have to save your borderline girlfriend.

So, What Kind Of Game Is This?

A fairly simple platformer.  You control some three-foot kid on a skateboard. Your goal is to rescue your alleged girlfriend from Demon Dan. You have to defeat ninjas, Elvis impersonaters, and maneuever some pretty tough jumps.

How Are The Controls?

Not bad. There are some pretty impossible jumps like in Ninja Gaiden. And there are sumo wrestlers you can only defeat by picking up randomly appearing bombs and making sure they step on them as they detonate, a painful task that often requires suicide to complete succesfully.

There is one glitch that I took advantage of on more than one occasion. You have the ability to jump while in mid-air that, while not increasing your elevation, slows your descent. If you find yourself in a difficult spot, you can jump into a pit and rapidly jump while holding right. You will be off the screen, but you can jump until the end of each level. You will die, but revive near the end of the level if you have extra men.

Is The Game Fun?

Not really.  The boards are very repetitious save a few spots, and the graphics and sound likewise.  However, what really saves this game is the ongoing plot. Your girlfriend has been tied to a wall in chains in Demon Dan's hideout. Between most levels, she screams out insults at you, threatening to forgo your date at the malt shop if you can't save her.  Better yet, each time she shows up to berate you, her clothes are a little more torn. One thing missing from most video games is a sense of humour, and I laughed out loud each time the cranky girlfriend appeared.

Who Would You Recommend This To?

Anyone who wants a few laughs. But to save you from having to play the game, I took some snapshots of the funny scenes.

I don't know what's funnier.  That this woman would date a short, stubby, skateboarder, or that anyone would want her for a girlfriend.
