Advanced Dungeons & Dragons

Dragon Strike

Erdrick Says: I like striking dragons!
Stan Marsh Says: Dude, dragons are intelligent and friendly!
Erdrick Says: Intelligent and friendly on rye bread with some mayonnaise.
The Bent Kangaroo Says: How come there are no kangaroo shooters?

What Kind Of Game Is This?

Despite the AD&D name, this is not an RPG; rather, it's a shooter, with dragons. There are some humans, too, I think, but they're trying to kill you, the dragon.

What Is The Perspective?

Bird's eye-view (or is that dragon's eye-view?).  What makes this different from most shooters is that the screen does not scroll.  There is a fixed layout of each level, and you can freely go in any direction.

What Is Your Goal?

To convince Charlize Theron to be my personal masseuse.

Right. What Is The Dragon's Goal?

To kill all the bad dragons and bad humans and bad ships and some other things, which wouldn't appear to be bad if it were not for them trying to kill you.

Is It Difficult?

Yes and no. There are not very many enemies on the screen at once, so dodging is certainly possible. You can also take several hits without dying and power-ups and health potions are numerous. However, your dragon will be constantly running into cliffs and trees as the elevation control is horrendous.

Why'd You Give This Such a Low Score?

I'd like to say it's because the boards are repetitive, but most shooters have similar levels. I'd like to say it's because the power-ups are dull, but 1942 also lacks in that department. It might be because the game is rather slow, and considering I'm not a big fan of shooters in the first place, I was bored to sleep.

Wait, Wasn't This A Simulation Game On The PC?

Yeah, I think so.  From what I've read, the Nintendo port has less features than does the computer version. There is really no feature in the NES version that could convince one to call it a simulation. You can pick from three different dragons and three different difficulty levels, but you more or less just shoot and dodge.

So Who Would You Recommend This To?

Those who are looking for a shooter where you can change altitude and don't mind difficult controls. But you're really asking the wrong guy on this one...
