8 Eye's

Simon Belmont Says: Play Castlevania or I'll whip you.  I swear it!
Our Japanese Translator Says: Is the game "8 Eye Is" or are the eight eyes possessive? If so, why not say what they're possessing? This job is hard!
The Bent Kangaroo Says: I'm a better sidekick than a silly bird.

What Kind Of Game Is This?

Ingredients

A little bit of Castlevania: Check

A little bit of Mega ManCheck

A little sword: Check

A little bird: Check

A little play control:  Uhhhhhh....let me get back to you.

What If I Haven't Played Castlevania or Mega Man?

Okay. You are some dude out to save the universe or something. You have to replace the eight jewels to their rightful place so some bizarre looking dude can tell you what a good video gamer you are. On the way, you have to defeat eight bosses in eight different countries. Then you have coffee with them as a skeleton serves you.

What?

You read that right.  Though, the coffee scenes are not interactive.

So What Are The Levels Like?

Most of them are fairly short, besides the two mazes (similar to those in Super Mario Bros. only much longer and more difficult).  Nearly all enemies are quicker than you and have longer weapons.

But It's Doable, Right?

Well, yeah, if you are willing to put in the effort, though your controller may not make it through. Making matters worse, playing levels in a certain order will make final bosses easier because you will have the weapon that is more effective against him.  Of course, there is no indication or clues as to what that order might be.

Grumble...Grumble...

Even worse, you must find a clue on each level as to the correct placement of each jewel on the final altar. Otherwise, when you reach the end of the game, you will be lost. At least there is a password system so once you complete a level you don't have to go back.

How Many Lives Do You Get?

Only one.  As the instruction manual points out, this is "real life." Right.

You Mentioned A Bird?

Yes! Your sidekick, a falcon, sits on your shoulder. He is essential to getting into hard to reach places. You can use him to attack enemies as well, though he is weak, difficult to control, and you leave yourself vulnerable while using him.

So What's The Point?

If you have two players, your partner can control the bird. He's still weak, but it makes things easier.

So Who Would You Recommend This To?

Those who don't mind screaming at the control pad when it ignores your feeble attempts to control your characters. Otherwise, despite its similarities to other games, 8 Eye's remains unique and a treat to those who love a difficult, difficult challenge.
