Newsletter: Week 1
This year marks the thirteenth consecutive year that the Sorrell Fantasy Football League has been in existence. At least 50% of all the players each year have been Sorrells, so the name is still germaine. But only two people have made it for every season: Randy and yours truly. Even more amazing is that Randy has gone twelve consecutive seasons without winning a Super Bowl (in case anyone hasn't heard). Assuming all things equal, the chances of this happening are 13.4%. Call him lucky. And since this season is the unlucky number thirteen, the stars have it in for Randy this year.

Interview: Curtis Martin
 |
Curtis Martin busted out of the gate with the Patriots, putting in some amazing seasons before getting traded to the Jets. While he hasn't matched the early performance while on the Pats, he has been a reliable performer. More importantly, he signed on with a new owner in 1999 who has stuck with him through good and bad times. |
| That loyalty has been rewarded. We landed an interview with the Pro-Bowler, and he had some interesting comments.
SFFL: Seven straight years with the same owner. And no long-term contract.
Martin: Hey, what can I say man. Randy likes playing with a winner, and as you can tell, I'm good at playing for losers
SFFL: That's a little harsh.
Martin: Look who he's surrounded me with? First year, back in '99, I was psyched when he paired me up with Peyton and Watters. But then he took Richard Huntley.
SFFL: Who is Richard Huntley?
Martin: Exactly.
SFFL: Are you saying you'd rather be playing for someone else?
Martin: There's been times, but ya know what they say about the greener grass, right? Besides, we look good this year. Rudi, Terrell, Moss. And no vultures to steal my touchdowns.
SFFL: From 2000-2002, your average draft position was 13. The last three years it has been 33.
Martin: Hey, I can't fault the other owners too blind to draft me. Randy's just taking advantage of the opportunities available. Had he picked me in the first or second round, I'd probably have wound up being teammates with Donté and DeShaun.
SFFL: But you did.
Martin: God dammit.
SFFL: Well, good luck to you this year.
Martin: Thanks man. But I don't need luck.

--Despite only having 84 total draft picks, the 31 NFL teams were well represented. Only the Cleveland Browns did not have players drafted.
--The only team to have six players drafted was the Indianapolis Colts.
--The Patriots, Eagles, Rams, and Raiders also did well with five picks each.
--Average age of players drafted: 27.84 years
--Oldest team is Chris's: 28.5 years --Not surprisingly, Bruce has the youngest team at 26.9 years. Not only that, he has only one player that has lived three decades. Matt Stover is 37. Stover was also the oldest person drafted.
--The only two non-kickers 35 and older are Jimmy Smith and Trent Green.
--The youngest player drafted? Larry Fitzgerald, who turned 22 last month, and was also drafted last year at age 21.
