When I'm reading I like to get lost in the story. Growing up I adored the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. I liked being in control of how the story turned out. The computer has provided the perfect medium for this type of storytelling. The reviews below are for commercial adventures, though a couple freeware games have snuck in.
